As long as there has been a means of playing back music, and listening to radio stations, the demand has been there for these applications to be used outside of the home. This is how the auto stereo system came into being. Although in the early days much of what was fitted into cars looked and sounded like an adaptation from domestic systems, before too long car manufacturers and electronics companies came to realize there was money to be made by fitting a high-quality stereo system in cars. As the domestic systems advanced, so did those used in cars, progressing from just radios, to tape players using reel to reel, cassettes, and 8-track systems.
